Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design
Institute for Theoretical Studies
We aim to ensure that students of our institute as well as of the design institutes have an in-depth understanding of art in its social, historical and conceptual context, can play an active role in its creation, and are able to mediate it in both informal and formal (classes, critiques, papers, exhibitions) settings.
Programmes
In addition to sound theoretical knowledge, the programme helps students build successful business development and efficient communication skills. Graduates can find jobs in design companies, cultural institutions, the art market, exhibition spaces or even the media.
Our graduates work at museums and galleries, design and advertising agencies, write for art magazines, are involved in teaching and research.
From the 2024/25 academic year, the programme will only be available in English language. Graduates of the training focusing on the development of business and communication skills in addition to theoretical knowledge can find employment with design companies, cultural institutions, in the art market, exhibition spaces, or even the media industry.
The Design and Visual Arts Teacher training programme provides designers, architects and media students holding or currently pursuing an MA with pedagogical foundations and skills, as well as a new degree. State-funded semesters in teacher training are available regardless of and in addition to state-funded training periods available in other programmes, for up to 4 additional semesters.
The programme focuses on providing a deeper understanding of design, visual arts and architecture. Our graduates go on to study for various master’s degrees or work at cultural institutions and agencies.
During the semester, we aim to furnish our colleagues working in the cultural scene or intending to work in this field, with knowledge to reinvent their activities proactively and independently, along the most recent aspects and criteria of cultural management.
Hungary is also putting a great importance on improving the competitiveness of museums, on increasing visitor-friendliness, on modernizing the infrastructure and on establishing completely new public institutions. Currently, Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design is the only institution where you can study museum management in Hungary.
News
Our University has been invited to exhibit at one of the world's most prestigious digital art festivals, the Ars Electronica 2024. Each year, the Campus series of the long-standing festival presents an art university. This year's exhibition is organised in collaboration with the University of Linz, and will feature outstanding student diploma works from recent years in Linz's main square selected by curators Judit Eszter Kárpáti, Esteban de la Torre, and Ágoston Nagy.
This year's diploma exhibition at MOME features a variety of innovative projects including a bed for lifelong use, revitalised buildings, self-exploratory photography projects, and an eye-friendly typeface. How do today's university students think? Where do they see the intersection of art, design, and the creative industry in 2024? What local and global influences shape their work? Spanning the spaces of the Zugligeti Road campus, the 2024 diploma exhibition displays the final projects of the twelve Master's programmes of the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME) and is open to the public until 21 June. To quote the university's namesake, László Moholy-Nagy, “Designing is not a profession but an attitude”, a proactive attempt to improve the world. The diploma exhibition is a reflection of this idea, showcasing the attitudes of graduates who are capable, sensitive, and professionally mature. We most certainly expect to hear more of many of them in the future.
Over a period of five years since the 2020/2021 academic year, the owner of Deák Erika Gallery provides a professional grant of HUF 500,000 to a different Design Theory MA or Art and Design Management MA student of our university each year. This is the last year to apply; applications are open until 12 June.
Events
The spring semester evaluations (KIPAK) of the 2023/2024 academic year will take place between 21 and 24 May over a period of 4 days. We look forward to seeing you on the Campus at the events that are also open to the public!
How to break out from the rut? Can our aesthetic and other choices improve our quality of life? How can beauty and aesthetic value help us find meaning in life? These are the questions American philosopher and former professional rollerblader Nick Riggle addresses in his popular books.
The 16 applicants who will receive the Stefan Lengyel Excellence Scholarship will be announced at a ceremonial award ceremony on March 5. It is a special pleasure and honor for us that the namesake of the scholarship, Professor Emeritus Stefan Lengyel, will also be present at the event.
