Friss Kakas Animation Film Days at Toldi cinema on October 6 and 7

The Friss Kakas Animation Film Days are organized by the Friss Hús Budapest International Short Film Festival and the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Anim team at the Toldi cinema in Budapest. After last year's renewal, the festival returns again this year on October 6 and 7.

True to tradition, the two-day festival will feature premiere screenings of MOME's latest graduation films, a selection of internationally successful films produced by students, and the most exciting works of MOME alumni creators. MOME classics and children's films will also be on the program this year. The audience will also get the chance to see works that were shown at the world's most prestigious festivals - Berlinale, Cannes Film Festival, Annecy International Animation Film Festival - such as the Cannes Palme d'Or award-winning work 27. Full-length animated films are also in the program: White Plastic Sky, Toldi and this year's Oscar entry of Hungary, the Four Souls of Coyote. Essential part of the event is the professional programs, where animation career paths and the future of Hungarian animation will be discussed, amongst others.

The MOME ANIM diploma films achieve many international successes every year and receive significant international attention. Some of the most recently graduated? students appeared at prestigious festivals such as the Annecy International Animation Film Festival (Mira Zénó: Fox Tossing), but there is also a Berlinale Special Mention in the selection (Erhardt Domonkos: The Corner of My Eyes). Two films can now be seen on the big screen for the first time, and three other films have already been showcased at domestic and international festivals, winning numerous awards.

In the MOME Alumni Festival Hits lineup, viewers can see the most successful films of former students, including Marcell Mostoha's Avant, which won the jury prize in Annecy in 2021 among the graduation films. The selection also includes the direction of Balázs Turai, winner of the main prize in Annecy in 2022 (Amok) and Flóra Anna Buda’s 27, which achieved the Palm d’Or from Cannes, the Cristal from Annecy and the Heart of Sarajevo from the Bosnian capital.  Popular animation by Olivér Hegyi (The Garden of Heart) and Dinner by Dániel Bárány. The organizers are also preparing a surprise film that has not yet been released in the cinemas.

2023 is a special year for Hungarian animation; in addition to the successes of the animated short films, this year three Hungarian full-length animated films debuted with acclaim at prestigious festivals: Four Souls of Coyote, White Plastic Sky and and Toldi are in the MOME Alumni Feature program, so those who haven't been able to catch them either at a festival or in the cinema can now make up for it. Several artists who graduated from MOME worked on all three films, including the directors of the films: Áron Gauder (Four Souls of Coyote), Tibor Bánóczki and Sarolta Szabó (White Plastic sky), Lajos Csákovics (co-director of Toldi alongside Marcell Jankovics).

In the MOME Anim Classics best of section, masterpieces that quickly became classics have been selected and are recommended to real animation fans. Recent graduation film hits include films from Katalin Anna Lovrity (Volcano Island), Judit Wunder (Bond), Olivér Hegyi (Take Me Please), Nadja Andrasev (The Noise of Licking), Anna Flóra Buda (Entropia), Éva Darabos (Bye Little Bock!), as well as Zsuzsanna Kreif and Borbála Zétényi's Limbo-Limbo Travel

The KIDS section collects interesting and enjoyable works for the youngest age group. On  Saturday morning, October 7, ear- and eyecatching songs and nursery rhymes will provide entertainment for the  children. Before the free screening, the organizers offer complimentary breakfast  for the children and their parents

In the new MOME Anim Fresh block, the audience can see the experimental works and animation specials of the BA students, which are produced during the workshops. The organizers have dedicated a separate block to the rarely seen works, so the audience can also get an insight into these special creations.

Alongside the diverse animation screenings, the professional programs form an integral part of the event:  in the ARTIST TALK program, career paths are presented, where those interested can find out what career opportunities await the graduates. Career paths are presented in blocks by speakers who have worked in various fields of the animation profession – comic book and storyboard artist, game designer, VFX and CGI specialist, animation visual designer.

International successes vs. domestic opportunities - the future of Hungarian animation - a round table discussion will be held with the participation of delegates from the Association of Hungarian Animation Artists (AA1) and the Hungarian Animation Producers Association (MAPSZ) about the direction of domestic animation and the chances of creators and films entering international markets.
