Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design
Statue of the reading worker
Project overview
András Beck’s statue of the Reading Worker is believed to have been brought to the university in the mid-1950s and debuted at the First Hungarian Exhibition of Fine Art in 1950.
It is currently located in the garden behind the MASTER Building. A larger, bronze version was also made and installed on Béke Square in Csepel (21st District), and featured in a 1952 film, Civil a pályán (Try and Win). The Reading Worker serves as a reflection of its era, and has stood on the University campus for over seventy years. Watching over generations of students – many of whom have emotional ties and fond memories of it – it has become part of MOME’s communal memory.
It was moved to its present location in the park behind the MASTER Building, next to the reading benches, in 2023.
