MOME’s new scholarship programme is touring the country – On the lookout for creative talents of the future in the poorest regions of Hungary

As a leading design and innovation hub of the CEE region, the mission of Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME) is to create opportunities for high school talents in Hungary’s poorest regions by putting a creative career within their reach. In what is one of the most important social responsibility commitments in its history, the university announced the ‘Tomorrow belongs to you – For the creative talents of the future’, a comprehensive, nation-wide scholarship and talent programme, earlier this year. Following up on its undertaking, MOME is sending out a team of experts to visit high schools in disadvantaged towns and villages across the country to meet the students in person. Nomination and application for the programme are ongoing.

Each year going forward, MOME will provide a grant, free creative training, and personalised professional and mental support to 25 disadvantaged high schoolers as part of its ‘Tomorrow belongs to you – For the creative talents of the future’ programme. The joint initiative of the Foundation for Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design and Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design will involve the selected high schoolers making regular visits to the MOME Campus to engage in preparatory and workshop sessions, consultations, and various community activities, with guidance and support from mentors and university students throughout the entire process. The programme is designed to empower students with solid, future-proof knowledge, experience, and confidence they can later put to use in any area of life.

“Our new programme is specifically directed at reaching out to disadvantaged high school-age talents living far from the capital, using a systematic and long-term approach. During the two-year mentoring period, they will also receive major help with mental health care and enhancing their confidence, in addition to creative-oriented preparation and building their entrance examination portfolio. We see success as a participant gaining admission not just to Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, but to any higher education institution, and as catalysing a shift in perspective for them”, said President of the MOME Foundation Gergely Böszörményi-Nagy.

In the first year, the university’s expert team will reach out to disadvantaged young talents from high schools located in and around Pécs, Miskolc, and Debrecen, expanding the scope of the programme to include smaller villages in Szabolcs county, the Kecskemét-Szolnok-Cegléd triangle, as well as Székesfehérvár and its surroundings over the next three years in close collaboration with local governments, study halls, and NGOs.
The team includes certified therapist, talent management professional Éva Gyarmathy, product designer and MOME General Deputy Rector Pál Koós, philosopher, literary author, associate professor at MOME and head of the student mentoring programme Eszter Babarczy, psychologist Eszter Lóki, doctoral student and former scholarship recipient of the MCC Roma Talent Programme Renáta Rontó, and group lead for upward convergence at the Hungarian Interchurch Aid Anett Jákfalvi. Year by year, they will contribute their extensive knowledge and expertise towards supporting the initiative and are also responsible for selecting the 25 scholarship recipients.

A new MOME Forest in the making: 30,000 trees and growing

The Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME) continues its forest-planting initiative, with MOME students and staff planting a new forest in the Vízvár area in collaboration with experts from the Danube-Drava National Park on 14 to 16 November. Celebrated graphic artist and designer of the iconic Zoom, István Bányai was a defining figure in the history of press and magazines. Known for his work with The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, New York, and Playboy, he would have turned 75 this year. To honour his legacy, his alma mater, the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME), will present a selection of his work in an exhibition this November, offering a contemporary perspective on his oeuvre for the first time in Hungary.

A beam of light transformed into a trophy: MOME alumni shine at the Highlights of Hungary

“A piece from which its owner can draw strength" – this is how designer Bálint Szalai described the new Highlights of Hungary award trophy, co-designed with fellow designer Adrienn Király as the prestigious event marks the beginning of its second decade this year. This year’s recipients were the first to hold the new trophy, while the Kreatív Magazine special award was presented to MOME senior lecturer and designer of the Your Nature collection Apol Temesi. All three designers are proud MOME alumni who remain closely connected to their alma mater.
