What makes MOME appealing to young people? This question was explored in depth by the MOME delegation at the 8th Konnekt Live Career Orientation Festival that included designer and lecturer Dániel Ruppert, Animation student Enikő Svarcz, Textile Design BA student András Parag, and graphic designer and MOME alumna Dóra Sirály. In a discussion with the audience aged 16 to 20, the team shared insights into their respective fields, explained the admission process, and discussed the career opportunities available to MOME graduates.

The MOME Directorate for Grants and Development has closed an outstanding year, securing multimillion-euro funding for a diverse range of research projects, including AR Symposium, Zenctuary VR+, and Waterside Voices. These projects span fields as diverse as urban development, nature conservation, contemporary dance, and the application of cutting-edge VR technology in healthcare. For the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME), bringing its projects to life to address the complex challenges of the 21st century is a top priority. As state funding is becoming increasingly scarce, securing and effectively utilising grant opportunities has emerged as a critical strategic focus.

Péter Maczó taught generations of exceptional typographers and was deeply loved by his students. Based on the principles of László Moholy-Nagy, his credo was that typography as a means of communication should be clear, understandable, and effective, and legibility should not suffer.

Art historian Brigitta Iványi-Bitter is spearheading an exciting new research and development project at MOME, designed to ensure that Hungarian visual culture claims its rightful place in the world of artificial intelligence.

The start of the year has been a busy period at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME). As part of the University of the Future programme defining the institution’s long-term vision, MOME’s updated internal structure has been launched on 1 January, marking a new phase in engaging with and involving its student community. We spoke with Rector Pál Koós and Vice Rectors Dr Petra Aczél and Lili Érmezei about the initial experiences of this comprehensive reform and the plans for the near future.

Dear MOME Citizens, It’s my great pleasure to extend my heartfelt congratulations, on behalf of our entire university, to Gábor Kopek on his 70th birthday. Gábor is not only a former Rector of MOME but also a valued member of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation for the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design.

Nearly ninety applications were submitted for MOME’s Tomorrow Belongs to You – For the Creative Talents of the Future 2025 scholarship programme. Applicant interviews began on 10 January at the MODEM Centre for Modern and Contemporary Art in Debrecen and continued at the MOME Campus in Budapest, as well as in Békéscsaba at the Szeberényi Gusztáv Adolf Lutheran Grammar School, Technical School, Art Secondary School, and Primary School, and in Miskolc at the Mathias Corvinus Collegium (MCC).

Another triumph: MOME diploma film competes at the Berlinale! Mirjána Balogh’s animation Wish You Were Ear will represent Hungary at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival, one of the world’s most prestigious film festivals, which begins on 13 February. Created in 2024 as a diploma film at the Animation programme of Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME), with support from the National Film Institute (NFI), the film will make its international debut in the Generation 14+ programme. Selected from thousands of entries, this thought-provoking animation explores how romantic relationships leave lasting impressions on our sense of self.

On the Boundary Lines, a selection of contemporary jewellery created by current and former students of the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design is now on display in six dedicated cases in the Dome Hall of the Hungarian National Museum. These pieces form part of the newly opened Shine! – The Era of Jewellery exhibition, which spans from prehistoric times to the present day. Alongside historical artefacts, the MOME works highlight the diversity and innovation of contemporary jewellery design. The selection features themes central to MOME’s design philosophy, including nature, space, the body, memory, and imagination.

What therapeutic effect could a beautiful virtual walk through nature or immersive gardening have? This is one of the questions explored by the Zenctuary VR+ project, led by Ágnes Karolina Bakk PhD within the FutureCare Lab at MOME, which has secured nearly 1 million euros in funding through the HU-rizont grant programme of the National Research, Development, and Innovation Office. Developed for healthcare facilities, this virtual natural environment aims to serve both rehabilitative and diagnostic purposes, improving patient care and the quality of life for the elderly, promoting recovery, and reducing the workload of healthcare professionals.

A stunning video illustrating the evolution of starspots over time on the surface of red giant XX Trianguli (XX Tri) has been produced by data scientists Ádám Radványi and Viktor Varga of the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME). Based on 16 years of observations, researchers from the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) and the Astronomy Institute of the HUN-REN Research Centre for Astronomy and Earth Sciences reconstructed the changes in the cooler regions of the star’s surface, known as starspots. The MOME team translated these findings into an engaging data visualisation animation, making this complex phenomenon accessible to a broader audience.
