MOME graduation film wins major award at the Fresh Meat

Date: 2025.06.11
The 13th edition of the Friss Hús (Fresh Meat) Budapest International Short Film Festival, held in 2025, is Hungary's only Oscar-qualifying festival and a prominent platform for contemporary Hungarian animation. Many filmmakers from MOME Anim have premiered their work there, including Anna Flóra Buda's Palme d'Or-winning film, 27, and Balázs Turai's Amok, which secured the Crystal Award at Annecy and the Heart of Sarajevo Award at the Sarajevo Film Festival. This year's award for Best Hungarian Animation Film also went to a MOME alumna: Katalin Sárdi for her diploma film, Greenhouse.

Katalin Sárdi's Greenhouse was awarded the prize for Best Hungarian Animation Film, which includes a HUF 300,000 cash prize. Comprised of animation film director Anna Flóra Buda, co-director of the Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival & Market Laurent Crouzeix, and director of Filmfest Dresden and a member of the Locarno Film Festival's Pardi di Domani selection committee Anne Gaschütz, the jury explained their choice, saying “We chose this film for its bold approach to storytelling and universe building. It features an immersive, surprising, bizarre, and trippy narrative with a captivating animation style.”

Anna Tőkés’s film, The Last Drop, received an Honourable Mention for its “immersive soundscape, fascinating insight into the competitive world of gymnastics, and creative storytelling”, as did Péter Vácz's Dog Ear, with the jury commenting: “This film moved us with its mature direction and honest approach. We couldn't overlook it without special mention.”

The Baltic Pitching Forum Award for Most Promising Film Project went to MOME Animation MA student Adél Szegedi for her project, Sun in Retrograde. The jury noted that it “portrays the romantic frustrations of a generation with a confident aesthetic sense suitable for the international stage, experimenting boldly with cinematic language”. The project automatically receives an invitation to the Baltic Pitching Forum and Networking Event in Vilnius.

The Fresh Pitch Animation Special Award was presented by Nóra Trokán to MOME alumna and external lecturer Réka Anna Szakály for her project, Witches' Sabbath

Finally, Péter Vácz's animation, Dog Ear, won the Student Jury Award in the Hungarian competition programme. “We chose this film because, alongside its unique, heartwarming, childlike animation style, its message is incredibly important and relatable for all ages”, the student jury explained. "The film brought a few tears to our eyes with its subtle nuances and held its own among the other live-action films”, they added.

Q&Alumni sorozatunk következő részében Tóth Ádámmal beszélgettünk, aki 2018-ban végzett a MOME-n formatervezőként. Ádám az aktív egyetemi évek után megalapította a Malom Projekt elnevezésű designstúdiót, amely termékfejlesztéssel, belsőépítészettel foglalkozik, műanyag és természetes anyagok újrahasznosításával kísérletezik, emellett kreatív foglalkozásokat is tart. Több projekten is együtt dolgozott a MOME-val is, például a tavaly elkészült Művészetek Völgye Pavilonon, amely idén is várja a látogatókat Kapolcson a MOME × Harcsa Veronika udvarban! Erről a projektről és még sok másról mesélt nekünk Ádám.

Eighteen gifted secondary school students from disadvantaged backgrounds successfully completed the spring semester of ‘Tomorrow Belongs to You – For the Creative Talents of the Future’, MOME’s scholarship programme for 2025. The initiative gave them the chance to explore the worlds of design, architecture, visual communication, art, and innovation up close, while helping them prepare for further studies in the creative industries. The semester wrapped up with a celebration in July.

Water still feels like a given in our everyday lives – but for how much longer? This pressing issue was tackled by secondary school students in the 2025 edition of the ‘Jump into the Future!’ creative competition. Working in teams, pupils from Years 7 to 10 developed bold, imaginative ideas for the future of one of life’s most essential resources. In the second round, selected teams refined their concepts in close collaboration with MOME mentors. At the final on 25 June, ten teams presented their forward-thinking visions, with four of them awarded by a jury of MOME faculty. First place went to Ísbíltúr, second to Bacsaók, third to Code Noir, while Newwave received a special prize. All four stood out not only for their creativity, but also for their systems-level approach, serving as a powerful reminder that water scarcity is no distant threat but an issue we must act on now.
